Frequently Asked Questions

What is a VIN?

A Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is a unique 17-character code assigned to every vehicle. It encodes the manufacturer, model, engine type, and production details. You can find it on the driver's side dashboard (visible through the windshield), the driver's door jamb, or on your registration and insurance documents.

How is this different from CarFax?

We use the same government data sources (NHTSA, EPA, NMVTIS) that services like CarFax rely on, but at a fraction of the price. Our basic report with safety ratings, recalls, complaints, and specifications is completely free. The paid NMVTIS title history upgrade is just $4.99 compared to CarFax's $44.99.

What data is free vs. paid?

The free report includes VIN decoding, vehicle specifications, NCAP safety ratings, open recalls, consumer complaints, fuel economy data, and theft/salvage check. The $4.99 paid upgrade adds NMVTIS title history including title brands, odometer records, junk/salvage/insurance records, and lien information.

Where does the data come from?

All data comes from official U.S. government databases: NHTSA (safety, recalls, complaints), EPA (fuel economy), NMVTIS (title history, operated by the U.S. Department of Justice), and NICB (theft records). These are the same primary sources used by major vehicle history report providers.

Is there a refund policy?

If the NMVTIS title report returns no data for your VIN (some very new or imported vehicles may not have records), we'll refund the full $4.99. Contact us within 24 hours of purchase.

Does this work for Canadian vehicles?

VIN decoding, specs, safety ratings, and fuel economy work for any vehicle sold in North America. NMVTIS title history covers vehicles titled in the United States. Canadian-only vehicles may have limited title data.
